IIRC it’s an HP2190 (or perhaps a 2090 - I can’t find the model number written anywhere. The iPAQ is brand-new to me, but it’s an discontinued HP model. There may be some issue with this computer that’s causing the failure. I am beginning to doubt that even if I had the original CD that it would install properly - I found an online reference that says the download AS installation software is a full replacement for the CD software. (up from 3. Tried installing the application-development software, but it wants an active connection to the mobile device so that it can install software onto the device. Microsoft ActiveSync 3.7.1 has been updated quietly from the Microsoft download centre. Tried installing 4.2 over top of 3.7, but it still refuses to install. I tried disabling the Windows Firewall and/or opening the ports that Microsoft suggests could cause the problem, to no avail.

What’s really strange is that the Windows bing-bong notification is activated as I cycle the power on the iPAQ in the cradle, so there is clearly *some* connection between the two devices. The installation completes properly but it reports that there is no connection between the PC and the iPAQ. I managed to find a copy of AS3.7 and installed it, kinda sorta. However I found somebody else online that had a similar problem which he solved by installing AS3.7. I suspect it pointed to an obsolete site. The link to AS3.8 is dead - the download site doesn’t exist any more. If you have any other ideas, I am all ears! Thanks for the info, Jerry and Stuart, but I am still stuck.
